"My toddler and I love this recipe. I never would have thought of adding tofu to a smoothie, but now I use the tofu/banana combo as a base for fruit smoothies as well, it's so delicious and creamy." - Chantel
Once upon a time, there used to be two smoothie recipes -one a classic chocolate peanut butter blend, and another simpler banana-based version. But one day, in a rush to clean up and save time, we tossed everything into one blender... and the result was magic.
That happy kitchen accident became this Peanut Butter Banana Chocolate Smoothie. Creamy, rich, and velvety thanks to a secret ingredient-tofu, which is made from soy! It adds an unbelievably silky texture (seriously, it feels like you're drinking a milkshake), and a gentle protein/iron boost that makes this smoothie feel just a little more satisfying, whether you're fueling your toddler's wild energy or your own.
If you also want to channel tropical vibes, then consider this papaya banana smoothie. And another fun cool treat are these fun chocolate dipped bananas, affectionately known as chocobananas. But listen, if you want to bookmark a warm, cozy beverage, then you need to give our authentic chai latte a try. We've even developed a recipe so you can enjoy it with your toddler!

Why we love this toddler smoothie recipe
For starters, it's delicious. Believe us when we say it could be mistaken for a chocolate milkshake. It's that good.
On top of that, it's packed with nutrition - fibre, protein, healthy fats, calcium, potassium, antioxidants, and more. When we were creating this recipe, nutrient-rich ingredients were top of mind and we sure think it delivers.
Since it includes three food groups, this smoothie could even stand alone as a meal for those wildly busy days! May we suggest for breakfasts "to-go" or lunch on a hot summer afternoon please and thank you?!
One more thing, this smoothie includes three top priority allergens - milk, peanuts, and soy. In case you weren't aware, tofu is made from soy! Why is this important? Because allergens are foods we want to introduce to our babies early and then keep offering them often throughout childhood. Based on the latest research, this "early and often" approach is the best way to reduce the chance of your child developing a food allergy into the future. We call this, repeat exposure! That's also why we came up with the most creamy edamame puree which doubles as a great dip for babies and toddlers! It's another way to keep up with that repeat exposure!
Key ingredients

Tofu
For this smoothie, look for soft tofu because it will blend beautifully and offer a velvety texture. This is the star of the show. But, if you don't have access to soft tofu, some Greek yogurt will work.
Banana
I mean, is it really a smoothie without banana? You'll want a ripe frozen banana for natural sweetness and to help thicken the smoothie. If you have loads of ripe bananas at home, save them for a batch of chocobananas.
Cocoa powder
Look for unsweetened cocoa powder. And yes, it's totally safe to offer this to your baby and toddler.
Peanut butter
This is what offers the classic chocolate peanut butter vibe! Use whatever you have at home whether natural or slightly sweetened.
Flaxseed
Opt for ground flaxseed for this recipe. The flax will help give us that fibre boost and healthy brain fats too.
Milk
You'll need ¾ milk but since smoothie recipes are forgiving, use more or less as desired. You can use cow's milk; but, if you or your child have a cow's milk protein allergy you can use any other plant milk you'd like such as soy milk, oat milk etc.
Allergen information & substitutions
This is one of those smoothie recipes that contains a handful of allergens: peanut, cow's milk and soy!
While we haven't tested all of these variations, here are a few helpful swaps--we truly believe the smoothie will be just as delicious:
- If your child is allergic to cow's milk >> choose a plant beverage alternative from this list here.
- If your child is allergic to soy >> use a Greek style yogurt instead.
- If your child is allergic to peanut >> use almond butter instead or even a seed butter!

How to serve peanut butter banana smoothie at each baby & toddler stage
6-9 months: While we don't recommend serving a large amount of this smoothie at this age due to the volume of cow's milk it contains, if you decide to offer a small amount to your baby, pour it into a small open cup like this EZPZ tiny cup we love (use code HHE10 for a discount).
You'll need to help your baby here, and yes, expect some messes.

Shop for EZPZ Canada here, or USA here and use code: HHE10 at checkout. Please note this is an affiliate code!
9-12 months+ : By this stage, your baby may be open to drinking from a straw cup, which is another skill to practice. You can pour the smoothie into a straw cup like this, or continue with an open cup.
For the rest of the family: Follow the recipe exactly as suggested. You're welcome to add any additional sweetener if you'd like.
Recipe FAQ
The short answer? We recommend holding off on offering your baby smoothie after nine months of age. While the puréed texture of this Chocolate Peanut Butter Banana Smoothie is appropriate for babies who are ready to start solids around 6 months of age, we want to be mindful of the ingredients we offer babies who are new eaters.
This is because when a baby is starting solids, maximizing iron intake and absorption is really important and this recipe doesn't do much in the way of offering that specifically. And as significant amounts of high calcium foods (like milk) can interfere with and displace intake of high iron foods, we recommend holding off on offering large amounts of them until high iron foods have been offered and accepted by your baby.
Here are a couple options for substitutions:
If you know your baby is only allergic to peanuts and not to other tree nuts, you could substitute any other nut butter - almond or cashew would be delicious!
If you need to avoid all nuts, a seed butter could also work here. Two options are tahini (which is basically sesame seed butter) or sunflower butter. Or, skip it all together!
We have options for you! You could offer your baby soy milk, oat milk, expressed breast milk, infant formula or whatever else is working for you!
But for your child's primary milk that they drink on a daily basis, choose a milk alternative that will being nutrient dense -- use this chart to help you!
Tofu is made from soybeans, making it unsafe for someone with a soy allergy. You could swap in Greek yogurt instead.
You totally could, but the truth is not every smoothie needs to include a vegetable to be considered "healthy". If you're set on this, try a bit of zucchini since it's got a milk taste and won't change the color too much!
Parents often come to us with a ton of questions about smoothies for their babies and toddlers--we answer all those here.
You can certainly offer your child a daily smoothie and this is the norm across many households and cultures. The key is to make sure you offer a variety of flavors so your child doesn't get bored of smoothies altogether (that woudn't be fun!). Another consideration is to make sure you offer "solid" foods throughout the day since a smoothie is a beverage, we want your toddler to chew and develop their oral motor skills.

We are soooo glad you love it as much as we do!! Seriously, milkshake vibes?!
I was a little leery about putting tofu in a smoothie, but I’m glad I did! My kids loved it!
This has been a great smoothie recipe to add into our rotation. I personalyl don't need the extra sweetness for myself, but happy to add in the honey for my kids.
Yes, who knew tofu would be the magic this smoothie needed!?
Seriously delicious! I love peanut butter and this was so awesome because of the no added sugar!
Yes, and the tofu is such a fun surprise that makes it sooooo creamy.
